Clive Jay Davis, the music mogul who signed Whitney Houston, has died at age 94. Davis died at his home in Manhattan on Monday, June 22.

He was recently discharged from a New York hospital where he was treated for pneumonia shortly before his death.

Davis was an A&R executive, record producer, and lawyer. He was the president of Columbia Records from 1967 until 1973. He was founder and president of Arista Records from 1974 through 2000 when he founded J Records. J Records was dissolved into RCA Records in 2011.

Davis won 5 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a non-performer, in 2000.

Davis was part of the success stories of artists such as Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Jennifer Hudson, Angie Stone, Sly and the Family Stone, Barry Manilow, Janis Joplin, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Earth, Wind & Fire, Mary J. Blige, Ray Parker Jr and Raydio, Alicia Keys, Fantasia, Jermaine Stewart, Monica Arnold, Tony Orlando, Milli Vanilli and many more.

Davis partnered with L.A. Reid and Babyface to create LaFace Records in Atlanta. LaFace signed TLC, Usher, Outkast, Pink and Toni Braxton to recording contracts and launched their careers.

Mr. Davis founded Bad Boy Records with Sean “Puffy” Combs. The label was home to The Notorious B.I.G., Craig Mack, Ma$e, 112, and Faith Evans.

In 2013, at age 80, Davis publicly came out as bisexual in his autobiography The Soundtrack of My Life. He told Katie Couric that he hoped his coming out story would lead to “greater understanding” of bisexuality.

Davis was heavily criticized for holding his annual Pre-Grammy Gala on February 11, 2012 – the same day that Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. She was 48.

Davis said from the stage that night: “She was so looking forward to tonight even though she wasn’t scheduled to perform. She loved music, and she loved this night that celebrates music.”
