Sinners<\/em> made history by becoming the first Black majority film to win 4 Oscar Awards. Sinners<\/em> was nominated for 16 Oscar awards!<\/p>\n

Michael thanked his family in an emotional speech<\/a>. “God is good. God is good,” he said, before turning to his family in the audience.<\/p>\n

“Yeah, mama, what’s up?” he said to Donna Jordan, before shouting out his father, who traveled all the way from Ghana to attend the ceremony. “My dad came in from Ghana to be here… my brother, my sister’s here, my family.”<\/p>\n

“I want to thank Warner Bros. and Mike and Pam for believing in this dream, this vision of Ryan Coogler, and betting on the culture and betting on original ideas and original artistry,” Michael said.<\/p>\n

Then he addressed Ryan Coogler. “You’re an amazing person. I’m so honored to call you a collaborator and a friend. You gave me the opportunity and space for me to be seen,” he told Ryan. “I love you, bro.”<\/p>\n

Michael also thanked Black Oscars pioneers who paved the way for him.<\/p>\n

“I stand here because of the people that came before me,” he said, referencing past Oscar winners Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.<\/p>\n

“To be up among those giants, among those greats, among my ancestors… thank you.”<\/p>\n
